Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture
Delivering convenience with autonomous transit
Transportation access
The operators of community buses that run on fixed routes and schedules using large vehicles are facing challenges: An aging workforce of drivers with the license to operate such vehicles and a growing gap between service levels and rider expectations.
Supporting residents
Shiojiri’s municipal government is working to build a sustainable transportation network that supports residents, especially seniors and others with limited access to transportation. By encouraging greater use of public transit, the city also hopes to reduce accidents involving elderly drivers.
Pioneering service
Shiojiri has been running pilot operations of an on-demand autonomous bus service since 2020. Currently, TIER IV’s Minibus is operating at Level 2 autonomy.
In October 2024, certification was granted for a Level 4 autonomous driving system capable of operating without a driver on public roads, and in January 2025, a permit was issued authorizing operations at that level, moving the initiative one step closer to the deployment of level 4 services.
